Once Upon--A 9 Day December Disney Trip

Our Story:

Hi, I'm Amber, and I just recently finished a 9 day trip to Disney World with my son CR (14) and my niece KB (7). That is their initials and we also refer to them as that quite often in real life so they are used to it. My youngest nephew is 1 and his initials are ES so we have just been calling him E. He's not old enough to travel to Disney yet, but I call him Plan E for when the other kids "think" they are too old to go with me. I'm in my mid 30's and don't foresee myself having any more children, but who knows, you never can tell what life may bring. I figure I will continue to go to Disney regardless, because I've been going off and on all my life since I was 7 years old. It started out with grandparents and parents. I've traveled with my parents there quite often, but they keep telling me their Disney days are done the past few years which makes me sad. I keep inviting them to go with us on our smaller trips, and they keep turning us down. Growing up my dad was a golfer & amateur pilot so when we went on vacation it was ALWAYS centered around something that had to do with one of those two things. Therefore we got to go to Disney a good bit since Orlando has quite a few championship golf courses in the area and we went to Sun N Fun, an airshow, almost yearly when I was a teenager. My parents would always let me rent a car and they would go to the airshow and I would go to Disney with my younger sister when we were there. I've always been a Disney girl at heart. Even one year when I was 13, my parents were building a house, and they said we aren't taking a vacation this summer. I was so upset that I got my grandmother to take me to her travel agent and she and I booked a bus tour to Disney World for nearly 2 weeks! I got in a little trouble over that one.....but we still went and had a great time!

I recently wrote another trip report for a short trip we did in October titled--"An Unexpected Trip that Left Me Feeling Unexpected?" If you were able to read it, that was me, and here we are back again already. I am a single mom, real estate associate broker that loves to read, cook, travel and spend time at Disney. My son CR is an honors student that's into soccer, video games, and his church youth group. He was an avid horseback rider but has given that up since back in August. It's been kind of bittersweet, because it was really expensive and time consuming, but it was such a good thing and we are both big animal lovers. The place he rode horses unfortunately had to close and he just didn't have the same relationship with his new trainer and he had a bit of a scare on a new horse one day. So I think with all that combined he just lost interest. He is a great kid though, and he puts a smile on my face daily. We have a unique relationship, and he is very protective over his mom, like I am him. My niece KB, well, bless her heart, she is me made over. She is precious and has wit and a comeback like nobody's business. That little mind is always working overtime. She is also the most loving, caregiving child you will ever meet. She constantly wants to love on you and have her arms wrapped around you. Which is exhausting to my 14 year old and made for quite a "bickering" vacation between the two of them.

As for this trip, it's become an annual thing for the three of us. This is our 3rd year at Disney the week before Christmas for our little trio. The first year we stayed at Port Orleans Riverside, and then last year we stayed at Beach Club-Club Level. This year we stayed at Animal Kingdom-Kidani Village for Thursday-Sunday and then Beach Club-Club Level for Sunday-Thursday. Beach Club just does it for me, it's very serene and a great size and so much what a resort should be in my opinion. It also doesn't hurt that it's right next door to my favorite place--Epcot!

I hope you will join along and maybe find this somewhat informational or at the very least entertaining :). I apologize in advance for any typos or grammatical errors, etc. Please do not judge the poor realtor that tries to cram every descriptive term possible into countless abbreviated slots that we are given. It gets ugly. I will try to do my best though.

Travel Day--Day 1

Wednesday, December 14th--Day 1 Travel Day

This day was exhausting! We got up at about 7:00 am or so and both kids had full days at school this day and I had several appointments and some paperwork I needed to finish up. Thankfully I had finished most of our packing the evening before because it turned out to be a full day of work for me. I deal with a good bit of investors in my line of work and December is a busy month with people trying to get in last minute purchases for write-offs and what not. Usually though it slows down closer to the holiday, but this year it didn't, which was a good and yet stressful thing for me. My sister picked us up about 4:00 at my place and we went to load her SUV. When she saw all our luggage, she said -yep, you over packed again, didn't you? Guilty. I'm so terrible on these Christmas trips, though. Okay, honestly I'm bad on every trip. The last time we drove to Florida to the beach, my parents literally had their feet resting on some of our stuff in the floor board of their SUV cause we couldn't make room for all of it (and they only had 1 bag). I just feel like I might need something so I take it ALL! Truly though in December you never know if it's going to be warm or cold or both. Are you going to need a dress for something, and then if so should it be short sleeve or long sleeve, so I just take 1 or 2 of everything so I have options. I like options. I like to wear casual clothes during the day and dress up a little more at night. So after a little creative moving things around, we got my sisters vehicle loaded and were off to Nashville airport. Nashville is about 2 hours away and Birmingham is about 1.5 hours away from our house. We flew out of Nashville and flew back into Birmingham via Southwest Airlines and booked this way because we got very reasonable pricing on our tickets. I think booking tickets separately seems to work to my advantage in more recent years, however I usually don't do multiple airports.

359.jpg
Loaded up and ready to go!

We got to the airport and our flight was delayed about 30-45 minutes, but thankfully they did get us boarded quickly and we ended up landing in Orlando at about 11pm that night. We went to collect our luggage and at the baggage claim we encountered a rather odd incident. While the group was standing there waiting for bags, a man came up very close to us and just started sobbing hysterically, but he wasn't really crying. He started shouting that he had health problems and had missed his flight and that he didn't have any money and that he needed $85 for a hotel room and was waving his arms around and some people were trying to get away from him. I wasn't quite for sure what to do. I felt terrible for him, but he was also making me nervous. I kept thinking being in an airport that surely someone would come up and assist him or escort him away, but he just kept on. Thankfully several men in the group went up and contributed to his cause, and he calmed down, but then he started whining that it wasn't enough. I felt really bad for him, obviously he needed help, and there just wasn't the kind of help he needed available right there. This has kind of bothered me, because I feel like I never know what to do in a situation like that anymore these days. I'm sure he was harmless, but I think it's the fact that people make me nervous, and I don't want to be scared of people.

So, we collected our luggage and moved to the Magical Express side of the airport where they immediately boarded us and within about 10 minutes we were on our way to Disney property. We stopped at Pop Century and then Art of Animation to drop people off. Then we realized we were the only people left on the Magical Express. Our bus driver got back on and laughed and said, "Well they saved the best for last." We agreed. By this time it was after midnight and we were all worn out even though we had made good time. I realized when we pulled up I had never received a room ready text so we had to stop and get our room number. That didn't take long and we were quickly settled into our studio villa. This resort was a first for us on our many trips. Our room was on the 5th floor and I was surprised to find we didn't have a view of the savannah. I booked this as a pass holder rate room over the phone and the CM mentioned the room view when I booked it, but at this point I was exhausted and I knew we weren't going to be in the room long or at the resort much anyway. I'm glad I didn't bother, because we never saw any animals in the viewing area to amount to anything until Saturday morning in our comings and goings and the kids didn't seem to know the difference. If I stay there again, though, I would make sure I booked the room with a view. The room was nice and spacious though and completely adequate.

Following! Looking forward to another one of your reports :)
Thank you!!! I had a little extra time on my hands today. We are at home because Alabama shut down pretty much due to threat of snow. By threat of snow, I mean threat, we didn't actually get any :RpS_lol:.

Day 2--Magic Kingdom--First!

Day 2--Magic Kingdom--First!

We woke up first thing at 8am on Thursday morning after going to bed at about 2am the previous night. Well, I did. I was up and ready and made the kids get up and eat a quick breakfast. We do Garden Grocer (mainly due to CR's food allergies) and it's nice to always have options for easy in room meals. The kids do the microwave bacon and plain Cheerios for breakfast. By 10am we were off to find the bus stop, which proved a bit challenging at first. We were following the signs to the bus stop and managed to walk right past the turn because there is no sign there, and continued walking down the very long hallway at Kidani. I kept thinking we had to have gone way too far, and finally figured it out. It's not far off the lobby people if you visit for the first time. We finally made it to the bus and were on our way. We were all very excited!
444.jpg

First thing first we entered the Magic Kingdom and headed down Main Street! That view! Then we were off thru the hub and over to Tomorrow Land. I will admit of all the places in the MK we spend the most amount of time in Tomorrow Land. The three of us love the People Mover and it's our traditional first ride. I know it's an anytime attraction, but there is just something about those views from it and the whole idea of how it travels thru so many areas. It was perfect!
381.jpg

Next it was time for a split up! CR was off to ride Space Mountain with FP+ while KB and I were headed to Princess Fairytale Hall for a FP+ with Elena & Cinderella. This was a surprise for KB. She had told me a few months prior how she wished they had Elena at Disney World so she could meet her. As soon as this meet and greet came available, I changed our plans and booked it. She was elated when we got there and saw Elena. It turned out to be a good meet also, the Elena that was on duty was very friendly and down to earth. We also met Cinderella and then headed out. We then headed over to Mickey's Philharmagic. I remember thinking to myself at the time this was probably really poor touring strategy, but I really didn't have much of an agenda. It was cute as always. After that, we met back up with CR and the three of us took a spin on the carousel. By this time they were starting to get hungry so we decided to grab a bite for lunch at Cosmic Ray's. On the way the kids wanted to ride the Tomorrow Land Speedway. I was surprised by this because KB never wants to ride it, so I haven't been on it in years, and didn't care to either. CR loves it and always wants to ride it by himself of course. So we got in line and I told myself--I'm doing this for Walt. It was his dream, or so I've read, to have a place where kids could drive their own cars on a real track. And it really is a nice sentiment when you think about it.
406.jpg
These stickers on her hand, they were giving them out everywhere this trip. I kept ending up with them all over me in all sorts of places because the kids thought it was so funny to stick them on me when I wasn't paying attention.

We then headed across the walkway to Cosmic Ray's for lunch and CR's allergy free chicken tenders. KB & I thought it was the safe bet to just get chicken tenders also and it was completely satisfactory. I made a note here that I wanted to bring up of an issue they were having for anyone that may be ordering allergy free food counter service. If you don't, you might want to skip. The people working in this area that day didn't seem to have knowledge of the proper procedure for allergy orders and combining the rest of the party's orders. Two sets of people were waiting on their orders in front of me and both had already long received their allergy orders. One man had been waiting for nearly 20 minutes and he was about to lose it. He asked me about my allergy order, and the lady at the counter kept coming up while we were standing there and telling him she didn't know why he didn't get the rest of his order. I explained to him that he wouldn't get it until he got the allergy order, and he was like my kids already got it and probably finished eating. So I asked the lady to get the manager, because I knew what had happened. They don't fire the order until you receive the allergy order that way your other food doesn't get cold while you are waiting on your special order. The other food is standard and should come up quickly and you should all be able to dine together, which would be normal, and no one would feel like the odd person out waiting for food. When the manager came over, she said "Oh I get it" and quickly had his order prepared and explained to the lady working the area. She didn't have a clue and it wasn't her fault either. So if you ever order allergy free food and get it, make sure they are aware and put your regular order in so you aren't standing around waiting forever. It should be done automatically, but not always the case. This was not our first rodeo in that department.

Next....A Pleasant MK afternoon & a Parade

A Pleasant MK Afternoon & a Parade

A Pleasant MK Afternoon & a Parade

After lunch at Cosmic Ray's we headed out to Frontier Land. We had a FP+ to burn at another one of our favorite rides--Big Thunder Mountain Railroad! So glad this ride was out of refurbishment, we had missed it in October. After this it was about 2:15 and we were pretty tired from the previous day so we decided to go on and hang out at our usual parade spot. I will admit it's probably not the "best" spot, but it's comfortable and shaded. It's on the benches that are outside of the Liberty Tree Tavern area. Thankfully there was one bench left when we got there, although the area in general wasn't crowded. The kids decided they wanted a snack, like we hadn't just eaten, so CR went and got us a drink and KB some popcorn and he got some chips. I was able to return a few work emails/texts and about that time I got an urgent memo from one of my good customers wanting me to meet him for dinner and drinks that evening. His mom and brother were in town and they were wanting to meet up and discuss buying some property. I was beyond stressed because this is my very best customer and he spends a good $2 million with me yearly. I had also already let him know in advance I was going to be out of town, so nothing like this would come up, but oh well. When I reminded him I was out of town, he didn't even respond to me, and that's the kind of thing that stresses me out. I bend over backwards for people and am totally responsive & respectful to people, so I don't get it when people just blow you off like that. It ended up working out though, because I've already sold him 2 properties since I've been back. At the time though, I was almost in tears, because I think I just took it all the wrong way, and didn't want to lose my good customer. That's me though, I have such a big heart, and I think when will I ever learn, but I guess that's just the way God made me.....

Anyways, the parade finally came and it was great as always! I really believe the Festival of Fantasy parade has been a nice addition to the Magic Kingdom. I try to make a point of watching it at least once on every trip if possible. The floats are so detailed and the performers and dancers do such a good job. It's another of those things at Disney that has grown to hold a special place in my heart for more reasons than one......

469.jpg

After the parade went by and crowds disbursed, I wasn't really for sure what to do with myself. I was still feeling a little stressed, but decided to just let it be and keep going. We headed back up to Fantasyland and went to the little store by Gaston's Tavern. Somehow in the process, I dropped my sun glasses and the lens came out of them. Now I am blind as a bat and wear special contacts most of the time. I do not go out in the sun without sun glasses ever. The sun was really shining that day too. Thankfully CR was able to fix them up enough so I could wear them until the sun set, and luckily I had several pairs back in the room for the rest of the trip. Next up we had a FP+ for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, then we were able to walk on The Little Mermaid Ride, and Dumbo with literally no waits. During this time I booked us another FP+ immediately for Buzz Lightyear from my phone. We walked back to Tomorrow Land and took another spin on the People Mover and then did Buzz. I had planned to stay until the party started but CR was having a fit to go to Disney Springs and KB was also. I really didn't get this?? I don't care that much for the Springs, it's okay, I'm just not a big shopper. Turns out KB didn't even realize what the Springs was, she was just going along with CR because that's where he wanted to go. We headed back toward Main St and ran into the flag removal ceremony. I don't recall seeing this before and it was nice to watch. We were then out to the Disney Springs bus stop. There was quite a line by the time the bus actually got there. I think this particular bus route addition has been a good idea. It's so much more convenient to get to the Springs now from a park.

When we arrived at the Springs we headed to the far left toward the West side and made a stop at the Coca Cola store. We had visited there in October and CR was wanting to get an ice on the rooftop deck. He can't have many treats, so I usually don't argue when he wants something like that. The deck is on the 3rd floor and you can just take the elevator in the back of the store to access it. This is a neat little place to stop for a drink and a view. They serve a wide variety of soda, non-alcoholic & some alcoholic it appears beverages. The views are really nice of the area and you can see the balloon going up and down if it's operating while you are there. I have this "thing" about hot air balloons so I always enjoy seeing them.

437.jpg

After we left here we checked out a few stores on our way toward the Market Place side. We ended up going to Wolf Gang Puck's Café and ordering food to take back to the room for KB and myself. CR ended up eating from our grocery order in the room. We also stopped in Once Upon A Toy and picked up some Tsum Tsum's. KB has quite the collection of these, and this time she picked out the little orange bird and 2 other newer ones. It was then back to the bus stop and on the way we ran into these two posing as statues!

439.jpg

They were really good. I can't imagine having to do that and being covered in all that gold!

We then headed back to the bus stop and were quickly on our way back to Kidani Village. We had a nice meal in the room and watched the shorts channel the rest of the evening.

Next up.....Day 3 Magic Kingdom...Again!

Day 3--Magic Kingdom--Again!

Day 3--Magic Kingdom--Again!

Before we knew it, we were up and getting ready to head out again. Now normally I wouldn't go to the Magic Kingdom 2 days in a row. However, I knew from being a longtime reader of this site and always using Josh's acclaimed crowd calendars, that MK on a Thursday & Friday when a MVMCP was scheduled was really a smart choice. So back to the Magic Kingdom.....Again!

We headed back down Main St and back over to Tomorrow Land. I mean, apparently that's the only way we know to go?? To our dismay, the People Mover was down!! Oh well! It was okay though because it was time for our first FP+ at Space Mountain (Just Keepin' It Real). KB said--I'm not riding it--and I said--oh yes you are girlfriend, you have ridden this 20 times and you are again, and off we went. She loved it, like she always does, after she rides it. Next I got roped into riding the T-Speedway again. Then the kids did the tea-cups while I watched. They go a little crazy spinning the cups, so I usually opt out on that one. We then did the carousel again, that is KB's favorite. Then it was off to my favorite lunch at MK--Be Our Guest! I wish there were more options like this at Disney World for lunch and dinner. It's really a calmer, out of the way place to kind of take a break and have a decent meal inside the park. I always pre-order, usually on my phone on the bus on the way to the Magic Kingdom, because I forget and panic and think about that awful line. I pity anyone that has to wait in the "order food" line. I just smile to myself and am thankful for my Disney knowledge as I pass them by to pay for my food and seat myself quickly. We are if you haven't figured it out yet, creatures of habit, and usually always have lunch in the music room. I would be willing to say we've had lunch and dinner at BOG a combined 15-20 times since it's opened at least. CR can have the pork and green beans & fries for lunch and that's always a nice change up from the chicken tenders option at other counter services. I had the roast beef sandwich and KB had grilled cheese with the turkey noodle soup and fries. We also got a strawberry and Master's cupcake and we split them in half and shared between the two of us.

458.jpg

We finished up at Be Our Guest and quickly went to get in line for Seven Dwarf Mine Train because our FP+ was almost about to expire. I had actually planned it this way, and the timing worked out really good, but if we had been stalled for lunch or had to wait in that line, we would have been out a FP. We then got in a short line for Winnie the Pooh. This ride is always special to me because the boy in the story is similar to CR's name and we grew up with a lot of Winnie the Pooh in our household also. After that, we walked slowly down to the Liberty Square area to our parade spot.....again. We decided since we weren't going to see the Christmas parade this year, we would watch the FOF parade again this day and that would be it for the trip. This time when the parade got close there was literally no one even standing at the rope down a few feet in front of us so we ended up moving down and getting a front row view. I think KB enjoyed being so close. She was really mesmerized when they came by and interacted within just feet of us. We then split up and CR went to Splash Mountain and KB and I headed to Adventureland. We walked right on Pirates of the Caribbean and then watched a pirate show they were performing back out front. CR showed back up pretty quickly and we all took a spin on--Magic Carpets--and yes they were trying their best to get me wet every time we passed the spitting camel. They thought it was so funny. We then picked up a few pressed pennies in the area before heading back to our last FP+ on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. After that we walked right into the Muppets Show in Liberty Square. I do love the Muppets, they are cute. Then it was back to the hub where we just hung out for a bit and took a few pictures. Every time I'm in the hub now I'm so thankful for what they've done with the place. I was fearful they were messing it up, but it's so enchanting there now. Especially at night time with all the lights in the trees. I love it!!

490.jpg

But 2 pretty full days at the Magic Kingdom was enough at this point... I really needed to be reunited with my one and only true love at this point. So out of the Magic Kingdom we went and off to another very special place! And what a great decision it was too!

It was a huge fail when I drove the car on the speedway- haha! It was like I was a 1st time driver ;) Love those stickers! They would have been great for our albums, but they weren't giving them out during our visit the beginning of November. Really enjoying following along...you have a report writing knack ;)

That speedway is something else!! They were giving out stickers everywhere, the last day at the resort a guy gave KB about 20 stickers at one time! I immediately put them up before they ended up all over me. Thank you for your comments!!

A Surprisingly Successful Evening....Day 3 Part 2

A Surprisingly Successful Evening....Day 3 Part 2

When I left off we were exiting the Magic Kingdom again. We had a very successful 2 days in a row there and felt as if we had done pretty much everything we had desired. We boarded the express monorail and took it around to the Transportation & Ticket Center and a monorail to EPCOT was there waiting on us! We were quickly off to my most favorite Disney place. On the way I booked an immediate FP+ from the phone app for Spaceship Earth, it was the closest thing showing available at the time. We had gotten a snack on our way out of the MK, so when we entered Epcot we found a spot to sit and let the kids eat their cotton candy. Then we got busy in Future World. We used our Spaceship Earth FP+ first, but it only had a 15 minute wait so it probably really wasn't that necessary. Then we were off to ride Test Track. Since KB is 7 this year we realized we could finally ride the single rider line while she was with us. CR got in front and I was behind her, that way we insured she would be somewhere in between us, and he could wait for her and I would be right behind them exiting the ride. They ended up in the same car together and I was right behind them, so it worked out great. I highly recommend the single rider line here. It took us about 10 minutes versus a 60 minute posted wait at the time. After this we decided to split up again. CR went to ride Mission Space, while KB & I headed to the Nemo ride with a few stops on the way. We walked thru Mouse Gears, then stopped and sampled soda at Club Cool. Then we walked past my favorite break spot and checked out this sign that I just love. CR started noticing it a while back and we always stop in and check it out while we are there. I've been a little concerned that they have ran out of continuing wall space for it now though. I'm wondering how they will keep adding to it this next year. I'm sure they have a plan. It's a neat sign if you have time to check it out.

512.jpg

Next we moved on to ride Nemo, which was another walk-on thankfully. CR was waiting for us in the exit area when we got off the ride. The kids were worn out at this point, but I really wanted to see if we could ride Soarin since it wasn't crowded. We went to the Land Pavilion and the wait time said 50 minutes, but it didn't appear that it could possibly be that long. So we decided to try it out. We ended up waiting less than 20 minutes to board! Needless to say even the kids were bragging about our good luck. This was our first time riding the new Soarin. We were going to ride it back in October but the whole Land Pavilion was evacuated while we were there, and that's a whole different trip report. I really enjoyed it though, as I did the old Soarin. I think they are both good, and a nice concept. I also got this picture that I really love when we walked out.

514.jpg

By this time it was getting later and we needed to head back to the room. I wanted to do a load of laundry while the kids were eating dinner and getting showers. One great thing about Kidani is it's DVC and the laundry machine's are free. Unfortunately the soap dispenser vending machine wasn't working. I went in the gift shop to see if I could buy some there. They said check the front desk, the girl at the front desk didn't seem to grasp that I just wanted to buy some laundry detergent because the machine wasn't working. She left me standing there for a good 10 minutes. She finally came back, asked me again what the exact issue was, then said okay I'll have some sent to your room......far, far away from the laundry room. So I went back to the room and waited. About an hour later, when I had said forget it, we heard a knock. Finally a lady brought us 2 packs of detergent. Then about 10 minutes later we hear another knock, yet another lady with 2 more detergents for us. Okay thank you. Then, about 15 minutes are so later when we are all in the bed and it's 11pm the phone rings. Yes mam, there's someone at your door with laundry detergent for you!?!?! I explained to them that we had already received more than enough, but they insisted that we answer the door and just take it. I was like-- you have got to be kidding me!!! So I got up and got the laundry detergent. It was really quite humorous. I still have 4 boxes of Disney machine approved laundry detergent in my suitcase that should get me through my next 2 trips!! I guess I really can't complain.

Next Up.....Day 4 Animal Kingdom!
