Today will be a long day. Because MK is open until 1AM for DX guests, and we plan to take full advantage of it. To prepare, we’re going to have a really quiet, low-key day until late-afternoon. So we slept in (until 8, ha!), and had a light breakfast at Captain Cooks, noses buried in our iThings, enjoying the quiet of the morning after everyone’s left for the parks. Captain Cook’s is really a pleasant space, and they have a nice outdoor area adjacent to (or part of?) Tiki Terrace, complete with umbrellas. I’d just caution you to avoid the powdered eggs. I find it hard to believe that people put up with this nonsense; it’s just gross. They’re all over Disney, and those who say Disney breakfasts are “good” don’t know what they’re talking about in most cases. Keeping it simple (oatmeal with walnuts, brown sugar, and raisins for me, thankyouverymuch) is the way to go.
After breakfast, we climbed in the car for Animal Kingdom Lodge, and our lunch at Sanaa. Call me cynical, but that tired old bread thing is good, but not the Second Coming that people would have me believe. Only two or three of the sauces really stand out, and the breads are good, but man, for $20 (I know, I shouldn’t be complaining about Disney prices), it strikes me as untoward. I think Sanaa’s offerings have gotten less than exciting, as their prices have increased. It’s still a dynamite space, one of the most beautiful moderate places in the World (sorry, Toledo takes the top prize here), and it’s relaxing and comfortable. The service was very amicable, but oh so slow. So a mixed experience this time, but I’ll definitely be back for the circuses, if not the bread, so to speak.
After (more) rest, we were ready to tackle MK. Heading over on the monorail is so easy from Poly, I know I sound like a broken record, but it’s true. We arrived around 4:30, and were pleased to see relatively light crowds on Main St. Since lines were still quite long by our standards (again, not used to waiting for anything), we started out with “anytime” things. I always enjoy Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor, and this time was no exception. I get a kick out of it, and audiences usually warm up to the schtick early on and have a good time. We then walked onto Carousel of Progress, and enjoyed seeing everyone nodding off.
Dinner at 6PM at The Plaza was expectedly pleasant. They had a nice fried chicken “special” (not sure how special, since they had the same one back in March when I visited) that’s almost big enough for two. A word about online check-in: I really like this, since it skips the hosts who just read off screens anyway, slaves to the seater‘s orders. I chortle every time I see the special occasion screen, and the “Sorry, complimentary desserts are not included” disclaimer. What. Evs.
At 7, lines were still a bit long, but we braved the 25-minute (pretty accurate) Pirates line. Then it was on to Country Bear Jamboree, a personal favorite, and Enchanted Tiki Room, another all-time fave. Haunted Mansion’s line was about 25 minutes too. It was almost 9 by that time, and it was clear the many had moved over to claim Enchanted viewing spots; we’d done it on Sunday, so were able to skip it tonight. BTMRR was a walk-on, and we lucked out and got on the middle of the fireworks, which was spectacular. We decided to skip Splash, which had a very short wait too, since none of us wanted to get soaked. It’s a shame they do this on one of their best attractions. It’s a real turn-off for me, getting soaked with that filthy stinky water. We opted for a Dole Whip break instead, and got in right before the post-Enchantment rush. Wow, that new coconut soft-serve with pineapple juice is pretty amazing. Highly recommended. We got into the Jungle Cruise line, and had a 30 minute wait since we weren’t as lucky in missing the post-Enchantment rush this time. On the brighter side, we got a really good guide. Once we got off, crowds were noticeably smaller so, we started our commando hit-everything-we-can mode and, in pretty rapid succession, did:
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin (walk-on, 25-minute wait posted)
Space Mountain (10 minute wait; took us longer to walk in and out)
Winnie the Pooh (walk-on)
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (line never stopped, on in less than 10 minutes)
Peter Pan’s Flight (about 20 minutes, even at that late hour, around 11:45)
Since were were pretty pooped, and we did everything we wanted to do, we left a bit earlier than the planned 1am close. Still, it was a pretty pleasant evening, without Genie+, but with waiting in lines like we never did before with FASTPASS/+.
Back to the hotel on the monorail (God, I swear that ramp gets steeper later in the day), and, wait for it, shower, wind down, sleep, at around 1am.
